Arvarath, a megalomaniac demonologist comes to power in the major world center, Karinth, as the High Priest of Theological Affairs. While in office, he persuades the High Council of Karinth to oblige his research into other planes and their possible uses to the races of Inembleth. At the same time, the forces of Evencrest and Evelna are proposing their ways of spiritual discovery, urging Inembleth races to discover the magic within themselves instead of looking to outside sources. Arvarath, fearing that people who have internal power no longer need to search to the other planes for sources of power, banishes Evencrest and Evelna and persecutes their followers. As Arvarath delves into the power of the other planes, he consorts with a group of very powerful demons, an in particular an extraplanar sorcerer named Kur Tel-Nar. Under Kur's influence, Arvarath uses enslaved tribes in the lowlands to build temples and shrines to the demons and began offering up sacrifices to these new powers. Unfortunately the shrines and temples created act as a gate key and Arvarath is consumed by the very demons he was consorting with, opening the depths and unleashing a ravenous force upon all of Inembleth.
